Evelyn Valdez – Architect in Training
This Texas Tech University graduate walked into our office toting not one, but two master’s degrees. Not done after completing a Bachelor of Science in Architecture cum laude, Evelyn added the Master of Architecture as well as a Master of Business Administration degrees to her list of accomplishments.
While in college, she used her time to travel the U.S. with destinations like New York, San Francisco, Santa Fe, and New Orleans. Additionally, she has traveled throughout Mexico with family members, exploring Central Mexico, from Mexico City to Teotihuacan to Tepoztlan to learn more about there family heritage and the culture of her parents and grandparents. In addition to traveling, Evelyn is an avid weight-lifter and cross trainer, regularly competing in events and [not surprisingly] winning!
While in Texas, Evelyn gained experience as an Architectural Associate at a Roanake architecture firm. Additionally, she served as a lead instructor and grad assistant.
We are happy to have Evelyn as a Drewett Works team member and look forward to watching her shine in her career.
Let’s get to know Evelyn a little better.
What was the most influential/life-changing event in your life? In high school, my engineering teacher encouraged me to apply to college and apply myself towards a degree in engineering. If it weren’t for his direction in applying to schools, I’m not sure I would have made my way to Texas Tech and into the architecture program.
Dream destination? New Zealand for sure! I want to visit all the Lord of the Rings locations.
Proudest moment? I competed at weightlifting University Nationals in Louisiana, and my parents and grandparents watched me lift from Texas. My mom sent me a photo of my grandpa looking so happy and proud. I couldn’t have been prouder of that moment.
How did you become interested in architecture? I started off in a dual program of civil engineering and architecture. I became immediately interested in design studio and drawing which then turned into a passion about learning how to design.
Favorite Netflix binge? Parks and Rec or The Office
What aspect of your profession do you enjoy most? The non-stop learning. No matter how long you’ve worked you will always have to learn new things. I love the aspect of always expanding knowledge.
Dream project? An off the grid home! It would be wonderful to explore the possibilities in different regions.
