THE PROJECT
Ground broke in January 2022 and was completed in June 2024 at this striking San Diego home that marries classic French sophistication with contemporary California styling. Clocking in at 10,000 square feet—with six bedrooms and seven bathrooms—the vacation home for a couple who loves to travel is the perfect escape when they’re not venturing through Europe collecting art.

“We began this project using a local art piece that had bold pops of color as the inspiration for the decor. It needed to feel sophisticated, yet playful,” says principal designer Rona Graf of Grace Blu Interior Design (graceblu.com). “The clients’ love of lemons and bright, cheery yellows and blues inspired the project’s name, Some Like It Pop. We also wanted to create a vacation place for them to travel to and never feel the need to leave.”

THE AMENITIES

“Having three primary bedroom suites, a bunk room and two bedrooms—along with seven bathrooms, a theater, gym, game room, bowling alley and a speakeasy—this home is the perfect vacation home to have some fun!” says Graf. Built by Qual Craft Construction (qualcrafrinc.com) with architecture by Ryan Dooley of Drewett Works (drewettworks.com), the home  offers spectacular respites at every turn. “Indulge in the thrill of a private bowling alley, or immerse yourself in cinematic magic in the theatre room.

“For moments of pure relaxation,  escape to the spa, complete with serene touches that transport you to your favorite resort,” continues Graf. “When it’s time to unwind, head to the speakeasy for handcrafted cocktails in a setting steeped in charm and intrigue. Outdoors, the pool beckons with its sparkling allure, perfect for sun-soaked afternoons. And at the heart of it all is a state-of-the-art kitchen, equipped with high-end appliances that elevate every culinary adventure.”

THE DETAILS

“Some of the most beautiful pieces in the home are the vintage Baccarat light fixtures from Paris, including the primary bedroom’s chandelier and the primary hall’s wall sconces,” notes Graf. “Another very impressive feature is the custom-designed tiered chandelier made out of vintage liquor decanter bottles in the speakeasy.”

Inspired by Alice in Wonderland, the speakeasy is hidden in the center of the home and draws inspiration from the Golden Age of jazz. “The room’s rich color palette begins with Benjamin Moore’s Yorktown Green, a deep, moody hue that envelops the walls and ceiling, setting a dramatic tone,” reveals the designer. “Everything in this particular room was custom designed with hand-selected and curated pieces ranging from the art gallery wall, to the heirloom brass tray that we converted into a cocktail table, to the unique conversation area with green velvet tufted walls.”

THE RESULT

“Imagine a vacation home where every corner is designed to be an experience, making leaving the house entirely optional. This retreat is a haven of luxury and entertainment, crafted for those who love to live life to the fullest,” muses Graf. “This home isn’t just a place to stay; it’s a destination unto itself, where every detail invites you to savor life’s finest moments, all without stepping foot beyond the front door.”
